John Christie is an Executive / Senior Manager with over thirty [30] years’ experience specialising in Occupational (Work) and Environmental Health & Safety, Sustainability, Lead Auditing, Quality Management, Enterprise Risk Management, Integrated Business Systems, Human Resources and Training and Assessment.
He is a Fellow in the College of Fellows of the Australian Institute of Health and Safety [FAIHS].
John is also an Associate Fellow in the Australian Institute of Managers and Leaders [AFIML], an Associate Fellow in the Australian Institute of Management [AFAIM], a member of the Risk Management Institute of Australasia [RMIA], and a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals [ASSP].
During his career John has held voluntary positions including the Deputy Chair of the NT WorkSafe Mining Safety Advisors Council, Member of the Board of Management for the Mining ad Resources Contractors Safety Training Association [MARCSTA] and a member of the NT WorkSafe Work Health and Safety Advisory Council.
For 13 years John served in the Western Australian Police Force attached to the Criminal Investigations Branch attending and investigating major crimes.
He resigned from the Police Force in 1994 attaining the rank of Detective Sergeant – at the time of appointment to that rank he was the most junior appointee in the WAPD.
John has held senior HSEQ management positions in higher education, mining, oil & gas, construction, EPCM’s & EPC organisations, as well as managing and growing his own companies.
He also appointed to the Board of Management for the Mining and Resources Contractors Safety Training Association (MARCSTA) and is a past Board Member for the WA Chapter of the Safety Institute of Australia. John is an approved business consultant with the Northern Territory Department of Business for Integrated Business Systems.
In his corporate roles, John has managed the health, safety, environment and quality functions of multi-billion dollar projects for some of the largest global consulting engineering companies, including the position of State HSE & Quality Manager – Kellogg, Brown & Root (KBR) where he was responsible for the management of major projects such as Hope Downs North, South and 4, Wandoo Housing Project, Marandoo, Namualdi BWT, Silvergrass for Rio Tinto, BHP Billiton’s Rapid Growth Projects 5 & 6, the Inpex LNG project, Gordon KJV, Wheatstone LNG project, to name a few.
As the HSEQ & Risk Manager for Murdoch University he managed the removal and replacement of the asbestos roofs of more than one square kilometer per roof.
This was a $60 million project that involved multiple contractors (working on 4 story roofs), in a ‘live’ work environment with students and staff on campus during work, and with regulatory, environmental and community impacts.
The project was managed on time, within budget and without a single incident. John was also appointed as Acting Director – Human Resources.
As a consultant John has led major HAZOP studies for major expansion projects for Simcoa Operation Pty Ltd for the Silica Grinding Process, for GASCO and NT PowerWater for the upgrade to the Weddell Power Station Water Bath Heater, Burner Management, Pressure Cut Train and high & low pressure gas tie-in points and for the Katherine Power Station up-grade to the burner management & control panel for the Water Bath Heater systems.
He has also facilitated major HAZOP studies and CRAW’s for BHP Billiton Rapid Growth Projects [RGP 5 & 6] and Rio Tinto’s 220 Projects, including Hope Downs North & South, Wandoo Housing Project and the Standardization suite of projects.
In 2010/11 he trained over 70 engineers in how to lead HAZOP studies for companies including CSBP, Fluor, SKM, FASTJV, APA Group &NT Gas.
During his career John has consulted and worked with many of the major companies, including BHPB (WAIO), Rio Tinto Expansion Projects, Regis Resources (Duketon Gold), FASTJV, Fluor, SKM, Hatch, CSBP, Simcoa, Port Hedland Port Authority (PHPA), Sandvik, Downer EDI, NT Gas, Gorgon KJV,
Inpex, Griffin Coal, Worsley, Sunset Coast Water, Pacific Dunlop, Capel Sands, Gorgon LNG Project, Inpex LNG project, Wheatstone LNG project, Cliffs Mining, Onyx Projects, WA Tooling, GASCO, PowerWater, and others throughout the past 19 years.
In 2012 he held the position of OHS/ERT Manager for Crocodile Gold Australia Operations in the Northern Territory. His role involved the safety and emergency management of 7 open pit gold mines, and underground gold mine, 3,300 square kilometers of mine exploration lease and a CIL gold processing plant. During his tenure in this role there was not a single lost time injury, it was the longest period that CGAO had operated without a single LTI.
John is an Expert Court Witness.
John is a Justice of the Peace in both Western Australia and the Northern Territory.
